The Center Theatre announced that over 8,000 people attended the 2016 Maine Whoopie Pie Festival in Dover-Foxcroft on Saturday the 25th. The festival brings bakers from around the state together to with artists, crafters, and vendors to celebrate the Whoopie Pie, Maine’s Official State Treat. Patrick Myers, coordinator of the festival, was thrilled with the day “The weather and the crowds were both wonderful. Everyone had a great time and we couldn’t be happier to show off our community to so many people.” The Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce and their Executive Director Denise Buzzelli, also play a large part in making the festival a success. This year the festival went later into the evening with a street dance going until 8pm. Performing this year was Sharon Hood and Dixon Road who played a wide variety of music that got the audience moving and dancing downtown.

2016 Maine Whoopie Pie Festival

Bakers are judged on several categories by the official festival judges. The winners this year were: Best Flavored Whoopie Pie, 1st Place: Cake Concoctions for Lemon Blueberry 2nd Place: RH Foster for Pumpkin w Cream Cheese Filling, and 3rd Place: Goulette’s IGA for Lemon with Blueberry Filling. In the best traditional category, the winners 1st Place: The Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church, 2nd Place: Goulette’s IGA, 3rd Place: The Frisky Whisk. Best new baker at the festival: 1st Place: G&M Family Market for Maple Bacon, 2nd Place: All Purpose Bakery for Gluten Free with Reeses Peanut Butter Frosting, 3rd Place: Cake Concoctions for Chocolate Raspberry. The most creative Whoopie Pie Name was “Wake up & Make Whoopie” by the Cake Concoctions. The Yankee Whoopie Prize, given to the best tasting Whoopie Pie that focused on Yankee Ingredients (Molasses, Blueberries, Apples, Maple and/or Moxie went to Elaine’s Basket Café for their Maniac Blast whoopie pie. The highly coveted People’s Choice award went to the Whoopie Pie Café in Bangor, with Governor’s in Bangor winning 2nd place and RH Foster coming in third.

The Festival also has three Whoopie Pie Eating Contests. The winners of the contests were Wynn (no last name given) from Bucksport in the 12 and under category, Kyle Winchenbach from Wiscasset in the teen category and John Hollinger, from Edmonton, Alberta in the adult category.

Myers also wanted to thank the volunteers for the festival and their large group of committed sponsors. Lead sponsors of the Whoopie Pie Festival include Bangor Savings Bank, Dave’s World and U.S. Cellular, The Bangor Daily News and Townsquare Media/Z107.3.  The downtown sponsor was Maine’s Credit Union League. Myers said there are also many local businesses involved, “Several other businesses have stepped up in a big way to support the festival.  Wills Shop ‘n Save supplied whoopie pies and milk for the Whoopie Pie Eating Contest and Varney Insurance Agency hosted the Varney Agency Kid’s Zone.” There is also a long list of local businesses who sponsor the Whoopie Pie Festival including Foxcroft Printers/AMB Signs, Berg Activewear, Dover-Foxcroft Chiropractic Center, Dover True Value Hardware, Cavanagh Law Office, Howard Insurance, Pat’s Pizza of Dover-Foxcroft, Mallett Real Estate, and True Textiles.

Next year’s festival is scheduled for June 24th, 2017. Proceeds from the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival benefit the Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft and its mission to make the arts a part of life in the Maine Highlands. One of the prizes that the bakers at this Year’s Maine Whoopie Pie Festival will be competing for is The Maine Whoopie Prize. The prize is the brainchild of Jim Bailey the Yankee Chef. He created the prize last year, and has expanded it this year to truly sweet proportions! The Yankee Whoopie Prize will be judged on its use of one or more of the following ingredients:

  1. Molasses, 2. Blueberries, 3. Apples (cider, juice or the apple itself), 4. Maple (any maple product), 5. Moxie
